Hi Steve. I know you are a Braille reader so that is useful. I don't have
a traditional PDA myself, only a smart phone so does Mobile Speak Pocket
work well with latest implementations of pocket word including reading
tables? If so this makes it an interesting solution for someone prepared to
cary a few bits and pieces around who wants QWERTY access.

Building on other comments though I really believe like you steve that the
Braillenote is the best out there conceptually as it is really designed for
Braille users who like a Braille keyboard. If someone could develop a PDA
with a battery capable of going for 15 or 20 hours then I may consider it
but before that happens, the PDA as a stand alone device will I think be
well behind us. PDAs will all be combined mobile phones, GPS receivers,
media players and even TV and radio receivers. Batteries are the only thing
causing the bottle neck for everyone at the moment.

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham,

Braille support with Brailliant and Braillenote is excellent with Mobile
Speak Pocket from Code Factory.

All the best

Steve

I would warn against Pocket hal and Braille, or at least, I would say I have
witnessed difficulties.

A colleague of mine used Pocket Hal with a Brailliant Braille display,
possibly 24 cell but can't be sure of that, either way the drivers should be
the same no matter what the number of cells. in his case the Braille does
not wrap to the next line if the word on the end of one line does not fit.
Instead, part of the word is on the end of the line with the remainder of
the word being on the beginning of the next line. Also the cursor routing
buttons do not work at all.

Now it may be of course that this problem only happens with the Brailliant
displays but if these limitations apply to pocket hal with any display then
the most diplomatic thing to say is that Braille support in the current
version of pocket hal is in its infancy.

I know other programs exist for use with PDAs but battery life tends to be
short as it is with most PDas as battery technologies have not kept up with
the hardware needs of the product. Also it is necessary to link the Braille
display to the PDA with bluetooth and then rememver to charge two devices.
all this is a hassle.

I do understand that Braillenote can be used with different languages. If
all you want is a note taker then this could be a good option. Braillenotes
with QWERTY keyboards and Braille keyboards exist though some may find the
QWERTY keyboard and interface somewhat odd. The keyboard is a little
cramped and the QWERTY keyboard interface is not that similar to Windows and
it always seems to me that Braillenote works more effectively with a Braille
keyboard as well as a Braille display.

Finally there is the Braille Sense. I understand that the Voice Sense, a
note taker without a Braille display has or soon will be available and I
have heard good things of it. I do not know about language support or
whether a version with a Braille display is available.

Subject: [access-uk] Notetakers again

Hi all,
Now that I hear about the Omni, their braille support isn't really being
improved, I've been really fed up and disappointed using the Pac Mate at Uni
with it's poor braille abilities, with pooror translation, having to write
in computer braille, and it's useless second language support, not to
mention the calendar. My question is, for a braille enthusiast like me, is
the braillenote really my only other option. I'm hoping I could sort of
trade the PM in for a BN, but what are the other options like, example a pda
with pocket hal and a braille keyboard, or some other notetaker. I would
like a powerful Word Processor and Diary, one that could even deal with
books which contain tables, being able to mark important passages in some
way also so that they show as marked on the braille display, and switching
easily between languages such as German, I'm really not too concerned about
internet connectivity and all the other functions. Another quite drastic
option which I'd like to know more about is one of those Handitech displays
which can also act as a notetaker, what is the Braillino like, how is it as
a notetaker?
Thanks
Ari
