Hi Trace,

I received several calls within a few days of each other trying to say the wanted to offer me a reduced price for television maintainance cover which I've never had anyway. So on the last call about a fortnight ago I did the following.

I let them rabbit on about how they could reduce my payment on television cover (which I don't have anyway) and when they asked for my bank details I gave the name of the bank as Action Fraud. For some strange reason the line went dead and I haven't heard from them since.

Yes, Jackie, I agree with all of that as well.

I just tried to give a different view on how to deal with them. It is not
their fault, just what they do for a living.

I do not swear, unless under extreme provocation, so I like to feel it is
something which people should avoid. The English language is superb.
People
should learn the language and use that to vent their frustrations. It is
probably more satisfying when you do so and they do not understand what
you
have said to them and then they go away anyway.

Just my two penny worth!!

Hi John

But some of these individuals are really worthless human beings who are
out
to screw you for as much money and inconvenience as possible, rather like
those purporting to be from Microsoft.  I have some sympathy with
double-glazing and other sales personnel who are trying to make a living.
But those who have no justification deserve everything the law can throw
at
them, always assuming they are caught! I think Microsoft should be doing
more to stamp on these people, but I appreciate this scum is always one
giant step ahead, determined to hack you for their own ends.  It can be
funny to wind them up or keep them on the phone for as long as possible
without giving anything away, but there are times when you could wilfully
kick them into orbit.

Kind regards,

Hi Trace,

I understand why you do that, but I see little point in using any
invective,
vulgarity or profanity against these people.
As far as they are concerned they are employees of a larger employer who
is
actually responsible for their efforts. While we recognise that what they
are doing is totally wrong, it may not be so in their view. They are just
earning a living.
My reaction when they do come through and I have the time is to see how
long
I can hold them on the phone without giving them any personal information
at
all. If I can then keep the line open for longer then the better it is.
It is their employers that the authorities need to get their hands on and
then confiscate all of their equipment, destroy it and then restrict their
movements in the usual way for criminals.

We got a withheld number yesterday, and when I answered, this person told
me
he was from Microsoft, and advised me to check my computer. Well I just
love this sort of thing, so I gave him a real mouthful which is not fit
for
repeating here.  Sometimes I can give these scammers a wind-up, but I
didn't
have time for it yesterday, so he got an earful of abuse instead.
Wherever
possible, people should reveal their number, but those who are ex
directory
often won't.

fair point, it's a difficult one in that case. I always tend to give my
mobile number to hospitals and doctors, at least if my phone reads out
that
it's with held I can choose to answer or just divert them to voicemail.
Most
medical centers do tend to leave voicemails.
cheers,
Mo.

Hi John.
I would block calls from international numbers and also calls from
with held numbers. Your provider should be able to do this. since i've
done this, touch wood we've not had any nusence calls.
cheers,
Mo.

Hello list,

I am registered with both the Telephone Preference Service and the
Mobile Preference Service which keeps the majority of nuisance calls
from hitting me. However I do still get a number of international
calls which do get through. That is, as I understand it, because TPS
and MPS only cover calls emanating from within the UK.

Both yesterday and today I have had a call from a withheld and an
international number that claims to be working on behalf of TPS. They
claim
to have been notified by my phone supplier that I have been receiving
international calls which turn out to be scams. After a few moments
of discussion with them and, of course, with no information being
given by me they have both abruptly hung up. In my view that proves
they were both scams.

So don't get caught by this new one.

I am aware that I can get things like call blockers and also  units
such
as
true-call but I do not currently wish to do so. There are a few
people who may call the house who we do want to get through.
