That is certainly a down side, if you're not near Truecall. But if you have
Panasonic phones, they will read you out the caller ID, and even the name if
you put the name in either your phone, or Truecall's contacts.
You can plug the base station of a cordless into Truecall and then control
it with all the phones registered to that base station.

Many thanks Steve for a good overview of truecall.
How would it work for my house, where the input point for my phone line is
on the ground floor but we could be on any of the three floors in the house?
We would not then hear the messages from truecall.
I say this as your overview suggested that the caller information initial
interrogation is voiced on the truecall unit and not the phones themselves.

You probably can't populate from the phone directly, but you can log into
http://www.truecallcontrol.co.uk and add your contacts. Then your Panasonic
will read out the contact's name.
Truecall only blocks numbers that are known to be scammers by Truecall
themselves by default. When a number comes through, they will be asked
their name, and Truecall will play their recording while the phone is
ringing. So you would hear "You have a call from", then the recording,
"John Farley", if you left your name. This makes it to me, the best Caller
ID system for the blind in the world.
If you then trust that caller, you can put them on the trusted list, so that
Truecall won't ever screen them. This is easy to do, while you're talking
to them, press the star button on your phone, and she will ask if you are
sure you want to star your caller, just press star again, or any other key
if you made a mistake and want to cancel.
If you don't like them, you can do the opposite and zap them. When you zap
them, Truecall will say "We are not interested in your call, please hang up
and don't call us again". Your phone won't even ring at that point. This
is done if you're talking to someone by pressing the hash key as you did the
star key to trust them. The hash key means you want to zap them.
You can also block different types of calls En Mass. For example, you could
block all International calls, except for your trusted listed friends. You
can also block all withheld numbers if you want, though you don't have to.
I don't, and wouldn't, because Truecall will ask the caller for their name.
If their name is not given after the question is asked twice, then she will
hang up, and your phone won't ring. Marketers often won't leave their name,
so that gets rid of them without blocking them per se.
Finally, if you get a lot of automated callers, with recorded messages, you
can strengthen the block and have Truecall ask them not only for their name,
but to say their name and press the hash key. If the hash key is not
pressed, then she hangs up. So that removes these pre-recorded PPI type
calls.
Truecall is fantastic. I know I sell it, but it has blocked no end of calls
for me.
We also offer support and remote configuration if necessary.
I hope this explains how good Truecall is, but I haven't even scratched the
surface of how advanced it is, more so than the blockers built into phones,
and it is completely accessible. The guys at Truecall themselves are also
fantastic at support.

will allow through. Is that correct?
I have a set of the Panasonic land-line phones. How would I populate the
truecall unit from the details held in the Panasonic library?

If you'd had Truecall, ikt would have asked for the caller's name. Most
people doing scams don't leave their name, so Truecall would have hung up.
If they do leave their name, Truecall will let the phone ring and play the
voice recording, so you immediately know who's calling.

The trouble with blocking withheld calls is that you risk throwing one or
two babies out with the bathwater. I know of at least two people who
withhold their numbers, whose calls I would be sorry to miss. So that one is
a clear case of 'proceed with caution'.

I would block calls from international numbers and also calls from with held
numbers. Your provider should be able to do this. since i've done this,
touch wood we've not had any nusence calls.

I am registered with both the Telephone Preference Service and the
Mobile Preference Service which keeps the majority of nuisance calls
from hitting me. However I do still get a number of international
calls which do get through. That is, as I understand it, because TPS
and MPS only cover calls emanating from within the UK.
Both yesterday and today I have had a call from a withheld and an
international number that claims to be working on behalf of TPS. They
claim to have been notified by my phone supplier that I have been
receiving international calls which turn out to be scams. After a few
moments of discussion with them and, of course, with no information
being given by me they have both abruptly hung up. In my view that
proves they were both scams.
So don't get caught by this new one.
I am aware that I can get things like call blockers and also units
such as true-call but I do not currently wish to do so. There are a
few people who may call the house who we do want to get through.
