Thanks Tristram
This Dell comes with an 8gb solid state disk, which I'm trying not to fill in order to gain a reasonable swap file.

One has to start from the proposition that a Netbook is not a
particularly powerful device by the standards of standard desktop or
even full size notebook PCs. It is after all a cheap, small go-anywhere
relatively battery efficient alternative. It will get you there but not
necessarily terribly quickly in that its performance will be adequate
rather than stellar. So you really need to think in terms of running
the minimum software you can usefully get away with. AVG is not known
for its speed or thriftiness with resources. If you do not feel you are
at high risk of contracting viruses then it may be possible to change
its scanning behaviour so that it does not slow things down at startup.
You can add more memory to some Netbooks however be assured that
although this may help, the effect will be relatively marginal. The
slowest medium and therefore your biggest bottleneck as far as boot is
concerned is your hard drive which is easily at least by a factor of ten
slower than your electronics.

Recently one of our users splashed out on a SSD solid state drive in a
ultra slim Sony notebook and is able (though at considerable cost) to
get boot times below 10 seconds. One thing that always seems to take
ages in Windows is finding a wireless network and everything seems to
pretty much stop for this to happen so that you can be almost sitting at
a working desktop but just not quite able to do anything useful even
though everything is there. I have noticed this characteristic on
multiple laptops especially where wireless is concerned and have not
found a solution to it.

Regards.

Subject: [access-uk] Netbook speedup

Hi
I have a Dell Mini9 netbook and it works well. However I'm finding it is
a bit slow in getting booted up and am wondering if anyone has found a
way of speeding up their netbook - it must be a problem for most as the
processor is not all that fast and when you load in Jaws and AVG anti
virus (or any other virus/firewall/spam program), then connecting to a
network can slow things down quite badly.
Also are there things one can do to ensure faster responses, etc. like
maximising memory , tweaking WindowsXP and swap files?
Thanks for any enlightenment.
