Hi,
I find numbers spoken as digits a hell of a lot easier to remember and quote
back than numbers quoted in terms of trillions. Also, when you come across an
unnecessarily long untagged element on a web page that throws meaningless
numbers at you, whole numbers with their trillions, billions, millionsand
thousands take a lot longer to speak or bypass than do numbers as digits.
The only times I would want whole numbers read out are in tables which are all
about money or other figures, or in sentences like:
There were nine million four hundred and fifty-three Thousand three hundred and
sixty-eight bicycles in Beijing when Katie Melua recorded the song, but the
full total wouldn't scan into the lyrics!
Best,
Clive

I agree with you, Steve. I think automatically spoken is better, and if anyone
doesn't want that then they can change it manually. Something that maybe I will
suggest that to the developers. But all screen readers does it differently I
suppose.

Hi,
This still overlooks the fact that some people want to hear digits all

Why not use the NVDA command "spell the word" Numpad 5 on desktop
which reads the numbers as single digits?

Great stuff Clive.
I guess we've all done the headphone/telephone shuffle, trying to
keep the headphones over one ear and the telephone over the other
ear. Don't need the added complication of the screen-reader gabbling
one million two hundred and thirty four thousand six hundred and seventy
eight.
Only took me about six attempts to get that right :-/

I know, but the big boys can handle it, JFW and Window-Eyes and
even Supernova has number control. It should be a basic function
of any screen reader. I'm surprised NVDA doesn't do it at core
level, since it was written by two blind guys and you'd think
numbers as words all the time would drive them up the wall, especially
when programming.
