Hi Clive,

The way numbers read as millions etc, is controlled by the synth, not the
screen reader so much.

My Dectalk Eloquence example serves to illustrate that in an earlier
message.

Hi Steve,

It helps to hear numbers read as they would normally be spoken by humans. We
always need to remember that we who contribute articulately to lists like
these are the smarter users, the 'aristocrats among visually-impaired
people', if you like. Anything that would be less confusing to a blind
person with learning difficulties or a limited knowledge of English as a
second language has got to be a good thing.
Now, how would we get Freedom Scientific to make Jaws read £10.25m as ten
point twenty-five million pounds instead of the daft 'ten pounds twenty-five
pence million". This is a real example I came across earlier this morning in
a news article.

Best,
Clive

Hi Mike,

At 52, you're only a young thing.  I am 55.

Interesting though that blind programmers could live with numbers being read
as words, when you need to know every digit when reading a program I would
have thought, but I'm no real programmer.

Hello Steve,

Thinking about it from a programmer's perspective (25+ years), such a
function would have to be rapidly switchable as there are times when you do
want a number read out as a proper figure instead of just a string of
digits.  Maybe you could assume if it has decimal places, or it has an
embedded comma like a currency value, it could be assumed to be a number and
not a phone number or a reference number.

I have a particular problem with this since, being 52, my short-term memory
is shot to bits so I have to hear a number several times before it sinks in,
and even then sometimes I have to do it piecemeal, like when I was
transferring numbers from one phone to another.

I can't remember more than about 4 or 5 digits in a string any more.
But I can remember what I had for breakfast so I'm not totally ga ga yet.

Hi,

I know, but the big boys can handle it, JFW and Window-Eyes and even
Supernova has number control.  It should be a basic function of any
screen reader.  I'm surprised NVDA doesn't do it at core level, since
it was written by two blind guys and you'd think numbers as words all
the time would drive them up the wall, especially when programming.

Hello,
Not trying to hijack, but even IOS has issues with something like
999999,
or
a phone number, at least, with punctuation disabled.

Hi,

Wow and a screen reader never had that basic feature until now?
Incredible.

How did everyone put up with it?  Phone numbers anyone?

Hi
Please could someone remind me how to change the settings to ensure
that NVDA speaks individual digits when announcing a long string of
numbers?

Many thanks
Henry
