Great stuff Clive.

I guess we've all done the headphone/telephone shuffle, trying to keep
the headphones over one ear and the telephone over the other ear.  Don't
need the added complication of the screen-reader gabbling one million
two hundred and thirty four thousand six hundred and seventy eight.

Only took me about six attempts to get that right :-/

Hello all,

I have just sent a request to the developers to incorporate the choice
between reading out a sring of digits as a whole number and reading it digit
by digit. And also to suggest that a sting of digits with letters
interspersed should be spoken one digit at a time, for example:
Our ref: G12345678H/235/K would be easier to remember if read as:
G 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 H/2 3 5/K
And it's important not to have to convert whole numbers to a series of digits
in your head when  you need to quote that reference back over the phone to a
service provider.

Best,
Clive

I'd actually go further than this...

NVDA is Open Source.  It is possible not only to change it, but to feed
changes back to the developers, and to have some influence on what it does.

I know that 'you get what you pay for' is a common maxim but it breaks down
when talking about software, and no doubt other things as well.  It would be
better if it ran something like this 'you get what they think they can give
you (the bare minimum) for the maximum price, and you have to keep paying or
they cut you off'.

There is a mass of free (as in as a bird) and Open Source software out there
and you might not realise that you use a lot of it every time you browse a
web site and make a purchase.

NVDA is more than just a thing which is 'a bit better than narrator'.

Even if I could afford it there is no way I would buy Jaws or any Dolphin
product and be held to ransom and forced to pay more than my computer cost
just so I could use it.

There is more than one way to swing a cat applies very much to software.
If package ABC does not work with NVDA then chances are there is an XYZ
package that does the same thing just as well which DOES work with NVDA.
Sure there are things about NVDA which are either quirky or just downright
annoying, but a thousand pound price tag isn't one of them.

So numbers get read out as words...which is annoying when it's a phone
number, so in my files which contain phone numbers I put a space between each
number.  Just saved myself a thousand quid there.

Hi,

I know, but the big boys can handle it, JFW and Window-Eyes and even
Supernova has number control.  It should be a basic function of any
screen reader.  I'm surprised NVDA doesn't do it at core level, since
it was written by two blind guys and you'd think numbers as words all
the time would drive them up the wall, especially when programming.

Hello,
Not trying to hijack, but even IOS has issues with something like
999999, or a phone number, at least, with punctuation disabled.

Hi,

Wow and a screen reader never had that basic feature until now?
Incredible.

How did everyone put up with it?  Phone numbers anyone?

Hi
Please could someone remind me how to change the settings to
ensure that
NVDA speaks individual digits when announcing a long string of
numbers?

Many thanks
Henry
