Richard,

I have just gone through the same situation.

On the recommendation of a few folk on list, I took the plunge and didn't renew
my Eset subscription, since I decided it was going to cost quite a lot for
three computers and I wasn't sure if I really wanted to do that.

On this basis, because once I'd opted into Eset again then I was there for the
duration of the subscription, I decided to try MSE and have been very surprised
at how well it's running on my older desktop.

As for its accuracy in finding nasties, I wouldn't like to say at this stage,
and indeed would welcome any knowledgeable contributions on that one; but I've
decided it's for me and for now and I can go back to Eset if I decide to do so.

A word of caution: Be sure to uninstall well all traces of Eset that you can
possibly do, should you decide to go this route and this should help in a
smooth trancision.
