Hi Ray. On this subject, the other thing I think GW could learn from freedom scientific is connected to sales models. JAWS is distributed by Sight and Sound in the UK and can be sold by others for the same price as part of a bigger system. This is broadly my understanding and I am of course more than happy to be corrected if this is not the case. Companies like Blazie for example specialise in script writing for the work place. Window-eyes is sold by lots of vendors without having a main UK distributor. This means a lot of one man bands and smallish companies sell Window-eyes but I know of no one working full time as a Window-eyes technician or support person in any company. I'm not trying to argue that JAWS is perfect, no way, but if Window-eyes wants to be a serious challenger to JAWS, and probably supernova as well for that matter, GW needs to change the model used to sell Window-Eyes so that a company can guaranttee or realistically hope to get enough sales to make it economically viable to employ full-time support staff. It is not always feasible or even possible for everyone to ring the US and rely on people there for technical support, not if Window-eyes starts to get anywhere near as popular as JAWS currently is. If scripting capability arrives in window-eyes in the near future, it will only become more popular I believe. The different concepts basically amount to a different philosophy involving exstensive use of W-E's mouse keys. The mouse is always available for navigation with no special mode being entered to use it. In this way, many Window-Eyes users would argue they have the flexibility to navigate the screen and find INFORMATION AND USE PROGRAM CONTROLS, SO THEY'RE NOT DEPENDENT ON SCRIPTS TO DO MUCH OF THIS WORK FOR THEM. tHIS This may, and often does, involve more keystrokes but at least things don't so often get broken when newer versions of apps are installed, as does often happen with scripts. (I'm not decrying the use of scripts in saying all of this, but merely pointing out a difference in philosphy.) Set files can, and do, help W-E users automate some things, and I think a substantial enhancement of the set files may be coming to Window-Eyes in the next release. I might add, as an after-thought, that the Mac's Voice Over might be more understandable to Window-Eyes users than most screen reader users, as I believe this uses simlar navigation techniques in some ways to Window-Eyes - albeit in a very different operating system. Maybe this is why Voice Over got such an ill-informed slagging off in the Access World review a couple of years back. Seems the reviewer expected it and wanted it to behave like JfW. If that's right, little wonder he was at such a loss to make Voice Over work. Haven't read back through the previous posts on this subject as yet, but I hope some good training using W-E is available at the establishment being talked about. (Not that W-E doesn't have good documentation, it most certainly does., as well as a key describer mode.) (I'll try and hunt down an article on W-E for JFW users, and I think there is one in the GW Micro knowledge base. Anyway Window-Eyes includes a JAWS layout, so that you can familiarize yourself with Window-Eyes using JAWS keystrokes. Yes you will have to read the entire manual as they use very different concepts in terms of saving configurations and stuff. Also, Window-Eyes doesn't work with as many applications as JAWS does, because of the lack of flexibility, such as scripting, in the product. Hope that helps, and all the best in your studies. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ari To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2007 7:18 AM Subject: [access-uk] Moving to Window Eyes Hi guys, I'm changing universities next year, but my problem is that the new university to which I'm going uses Window Eyes, while at the old uni and at home I've used JAWS all my life. My question is, is there some sort of guide for JAWS users to quickly get going with WE, or do I really have to work through the whole manual?
