Hi Ian,

We also supply Nano, and I believe SW Retail may do too, but last week,
Sunil asked me for about a 60 second soundbite which didn't get used. I am
not complaining about that, but how can exhibitors, when they are setting
up, tell you about their products in 60 seconds or so, especially when they
were not set up. It would have been better if a reporter came to Sight and
interviewed suppliers, much like VIP On Air and T and T did, and then make a
report of that, rather than catching suppliers when they were rushing around
setting up. To me, it was the daftest idea. It would have been better
reported, I feel, if it was done the week after, not rushed before the
event.

All the best

Hi Adrian, in the end we talked to Technovision about it for the show.
But my sources tell me that at least a couple of other UK distributors have
it. I have to say, none of them was falling over themselves to tell me or
In Touch about it either last week or when it emerged. In the end, a Google
of Nano Braille PDA brought up Caretec in Austria and Technovision over
here.

Ian - where did you find info on the nano? I tried to source one after SV
last year but couldn't find a uk supplier who would answer the phone nor any
detail or specs online other than a list of international distributors.

They certainly weren't taken as such, David. And everyone will have their
individual view on each individual show. As for this wee,, I'm afraid it's
not my call as Cheryl is back in harness. However, for the future, I am in
the process of trying to put together a thorough-going look at PDA options
for blindies to include recent developments such as the nano and MSP with a
mainstream PDA. As for being the resident expert, I'm very far from it, but
I think I am good at approaching technology from the perspective of the
average Joe or Jo and if we ever want or need real expertise, then there are
people from among this list's membership who offer it very willingly.

Cheers now.

Ian,

I fully accept your points, and personally would have preferred a considered
report on SV the following week. There is no particular need to have it
while the exhibition is taking place. Of course you have many things to
cover, and not enough time to cover all that should be covered, and it is
impossible to please everyone. My point really was that the negative views
expressed by people who were not there could have been expressed at any time
on any In Touch programme. Of course you are working to a tight schedule,
but I am still of the opinion that SV deserved more coverage than it in fact
got. But you might surprise me and devote the whole of this week's show to
technology, but thereagain, you might not.

I know Ian that you are as interested in the technological side as any of
us, indeed you are the In Touch techy expert, so any criticisms from me are
not directed at you personally. we really do need more than twenty minutes
per week.

David

David, it's simply not possible to comprehensively cover everything new at
SV. For one thing the event opened on the Tuesday. Our reporter was there
on the Monday when people were setting up because he would not have been
able to gather the material, edit it and send it down for the recording on
the Tuesday. This meant that many of the exhibitors simply didn't have the
kit to hand. Some of them were therefore talking off the top on the basis
of what they could remember about individual products. Others appeared to
know little or nothing and resorted to reading marketing blurb off product
websites. As you can imagine, this didn't make either for particularly good
radio or accurate journalism.
As far as possible, when I have anything to do with the inclusion of
technical items in the show, I work on the basis that reviews should be
based on as thorough an evaluation as possible. Clearly it's not possible
for a reporter to get hold of a piece of new equipment at SV and give it a
thorough going over for the wireless. Finally, technology, like sport, is
something which as many people tune out from as in to.

Cheers now.

Ian

I am with Carol on this one. Not sure how much time was spent on last
week's In touch about the Exhibition, although I did listen. there were a
few very brief comments, mainly about PDAs and the rest of the item was
talking to people who were not there about why they did not go?
They could have done that on another week and given more time to what was
exhibited and to talk to people who attended.

It does appear strange that In Touch always tries to seek out new equipment,
and when it all appears in one convenient place, they show little interest.
If half as much time were taken up with techy equipment as is expended on
guide dogs, then there would be more3 of a balance.

David

Doris,

I think you may not quite understand what I'm saying here. I'm talking
about those who don't yet know enough about computers and the internet to
even be interested in podcatching. There are also plenty of other items in
the exhibition which are not specifically hi-tech and it's these that they
certainly ought to be talking about.
