Hi Folks

Below is the blurb from Access-IT regarding the Milestone 312.

I hope by doing this I am not infringing any copywright rules.

Bones launches Milestone 312
Bones has announced the release of Milestone 312, an enhanced version of the Milestone 311. Milestone 312, due to be available from July 2008, has many new functions, including
variable playback speed, Text-To-Speech,
Audible.com
playback, Daisy 3.0, integrated RFID reader, integrated FM tuner and direct connection of stereo microphones. The hardware includes 1 GB internal Flash memory, USB 2.0 OTG High Speed connectivity, a clock and the proven strong, crystal clear speaker. Milestone 312 comes in the well-known case of its predecessor, at the size of a credit card with 5 front buttons. New, however, is the degree to which Milestone 312 can be configured. Everything is possible between being fully fledged, packed with functions and being reduced to one simple function. Customers pay only for those functions they want to enable. This ensures the individual user won't get lost in a sea of
options.
"While Milestone 312 combines a very rich set of possibilities, it reflects the diversity of the visually impaired, since people only pay for what they intend to use", says
Stephan Knecht, managing director of Bones.
Milestone 312 plays back Daisy 2.02, Daisy 3.0, MP3, AAC, WAV, OGG, WMA and
Audible.com
. Recording is possible in MP3 or WAV, either to an SD memory card or to the internal Flash memory. Playback in variable speed is possible in any of the mentioned formats. It reads TXT, DOC and HTML files, in 19 available languages. Five of them can be stored simultaneously inside the internal memory. The TTS Engine is from Acapela. Milestone 312 has an integrated FM tuner and integrated RFID Speakout functionality
to identify tags and associate messages with them.
The integrated clock allows time stamping of messages as well as alarm functions.
For instance, time controlled recording from FM tuner is possible.
Optionally, Milestone 312 is available with Bones PAVIP technology: The solution
to interact with Public Transportation vehicles.
And from autumn 2008, there will be hardware options, so called Add-Ons, available. The first two Add-Ons will be a colour detector and a high-end stereo microphone. RNIB hopes to be demonstrating the Milestone 312 on its stand at Sight Village next
month.

Ray, it supports USB 2.0 from what I read. I don't get Access IT on disk, otherwise I would have pasted the info into the body of a message. But in essence, it can do a lot of things with additional features like a colour detector in the future. Now that might be worth further investigation? Not being a Milestone fan particularly, I'm in no hurry!

Very interesting Clive.

It would be nice if someone comes up with accurate info on the Milestone 312. I've found a news story at:
http://magnifiers.org/news.php?action=fullnews&id=331

There, mention is made of a USB interface for transfer of files. An RnIB forum though is talking about the USB being only 1.1. So, which is it?

the modular approach is interesting; bolting on features that people want thus tailoring this device to differing needs and how much one is prepared to spend. Options such as a stereo mic, colour detector are mentioned in the news story at the above link.

Mind you, the Bones website isn't a lot of use. Nice big pictures of people, but near meaningless links and not much info, too.

Intriguing. Let's hear more, though I'm happy with my Victor Stream, USB 1.1 accepted.

Cheers,
Ray.

Hello everyone,

As readers of Access IT will know, this month's issue ran a news item about the release of Milestone 312. For those who don't receive the magazine, this is a much-improved product to its predecessor. From what I understand, you pay for the features you want (there are quite a few listed), so it can be as simple or as sophisticated as you wish. I would be interested to hear comments from others on the list and look forward to further news on this product.

Best wishes,

Clive Pallett
