silverlight is a proprietory add on produced by Microsoft, however this is now consiered almost lagacy software and increasing numbers of peole are not using it, interesting of late even microsoft are no longer recommendingit, you dont need silverlight unless web content is buit specifically to work with silverlight and thees days very little content relie on it as the download footprint for silverlight is escessive for what it actually does.
