I had a friend who went shopping at a big superstore and used the store's
facility to call a taxi but didn't think to mention he had a guide dog. The
taxi firm's only available car was a white Rolls Royce which was booked for a
wedding later that day. When the driver arrived, he explained he could not
take the dog in the car as there would not be time to clean it out before the
wedding and told the GDO that he should have mentioned he had a guide dog
when he called. My friend was very angry, despite the taxi firm saying that
they would send the next available taxi and he insisted that when the taxi
was sent, as recompense, they should not make a charge.
I know we have the law on our side, but I would always mention that I have a
guide dog when booking a cab or taking the dog to a restaurant; I feel it is
courtesy and also means they can send a driver who is comfortable with dogs
and I'd rather sort out the dog issues on the phone with a restaurant prior
to arrival than attracting attention by being refused when I turn up.
Anything for a quiet life!
