Yes Caroline there is a play button on the remote for a DVD player. This
will usually allow you to access the main film. The problem is that without
seeing the menus it may be difficult to find out when the main film starts
and, it could be almost impossible to access any of the extra features on
the disc via the menus. I do not need sighted help as I have enough sight to
be able to handle the menus if I can get close enough to the screen. But for
a totally blind person I think this system would be difficult at best and
impossible at its worst.

It sounds as if I'm not going to be lucky to find an accessible DVD player then. Have you had any luck at all in playing DVD's without sighted help, or is everything totally inaccessible? By the sounds of it, a menu must appear on the screen whenever you put a DVD into the drive, and this menu can be totally different for each disk you try to play. Is this correct? So there isn't anything as simple as a play button on DVD remotes as there is on remotes for VCR's?
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has found a way to play DVD's independently. I know it can be done on the PC, but when using a player hooked up to the TV, it doesn't sound promising.

I have not found a dvd player that is accessable without sightted help, as
for the other questions some models can store the possition of the last 10
or so dvds you have played and when you put the dvd in again it will start
at the point that it finnished at when you took it out, some will only
remember where you were last time you watched it if you do not take the dvd
out of the machine and some will start from the beginning every time you
turn on the machine. Dvds all seem to play in differant ways some will play
through from beginning to end once you have started them and others will
need restarting from the menu when you want to play a differant programme.
