To answer your questions in order:
No, we have a wireless router with a desktop PC directly connected and my
wife and my laptops connected wirelessly.
It's only my laptop which cannot access the network, the other machines are
ok.
All machines are running Windows XP Home.
As explained above, we have a wireless router for internet access.
