bad news. the ones you and I bought have been discontinued. I knew I
should've bought 5 or so at the time! lesson for the future. when a decent
product comes a long at a decent price, buy a few of them! if I hadn't been
moving house at the time I probably would've done. i'm kicking myself... now
to try the caretech product and see if that's any better, just hope its as
portable as these.

I have made a light-probe by buying some length of optical fibre on
Ebay, feeding it down the barrel of an old ballpoint pen and glueing
it in. The light detector I am talking about has a tiny hole small
enough to accept the other end of the optical fibre.
What did I do this for? To be able to tell when surface mounted LEDs
on a printed circuit board like that of the Raspberry Pi are flashing.
The end of the old ballpoint pen barrel is non-conductive and it is
safe to go poking about on the PCB with until you hit the LED.
Can't do that with an iPhone or Android app.
