hello mike.

bad news. the ones you and I bought have been discontinued. I knew I should've bought 5 or so at the time! lesson for the future. when a decent product comes a long at a decent price, buy a few of them! if I hadn't been moving house at the time I probably would've done. i'm kicking myself... now to try the caretech product and see if that's any better, just hope its as portable as these.

cheers,

Mo.

Yes but it is no good for what I want it for...

I have made a light-probe by buying some length of optical fibre on
Ebay, feeding it down the barrel of an old ballpoint pen and glueing it
in.  The light detector I am talking about has a tiny hole small enough
to accept the other end of the optical fibre.

What did I do this for?  To be able to tell when surface mounted LEDs on
a printed circuit board like that of the Raspberry Pi are flashing.

The end of the old ballpoint pen barrel is non-conductive and it is safe
to go poking about on the PCB with until you hit the LED.

Can't do that with an iPhone or Android app.

There's an app for that

Mo,

If I could still see I could replicate it.  There is virtually nothing
in there and nothing a hobby electronics person could do.

Hi Mike.

I also bought some of these but it looks like they've been discontinued.
I've emailed the supplier I used and will let you know when he gets back
to me. they're extremely useful, and i don't think would be hard to
manufacturer if the worst came to the worst. there are other products on
the market from the likes of caretech, but how portable they are i'm not
sure.

cheers,

Mo.

Hello folks,

I have here a light detector.  As far as I can remember it came from the
RNIB.

It is in a small plastic enclosure, roughly 2 inches by an inch and a
half and about an inch high.  It has a sliding cover on the top which
reveals a push button.

Light enters from a tiny hole in one of the sides of the device.

I would like to get hold of some more of these, but like so many other
things, it looks like the RNIB don't have them any more.

Does anybody have any idea of where else they might be available?

There's about a quid's worth of electronic components in it, including
either a 555 timer chip or a 741, a couple of resistors and a
light-dependent resistor.  But no doubt it costs an arm and a leg.
