No it won't be impossible.
The way the keyboard works is you move your finger around the screen until
you hear the key you want, then simply lift. When you lift, the key is
entered. For iOS users, this is akin to touch typing mode on the iPhone.
The iPhone's double tap to enter a key method or the standard method is not
available on Android.
It could be that the manufacturer has their own keyboard which may not be so
great. In that case, download the Jelly Bean Keyboard by VLLP I believe but
the first search for Jelly Bean Keyboard in the play store will come up with
it. It is free.
Also, for a free launcher which is often better than the manufacturer's
launcher is Nova Launcher. This is what I love about Android, its
customisability.
I have never heard of that phone but will certainly check it out.

I must admit I was rather hoping you would reply.
The phone is a Hua Wei Ascend y300 if that means anything to you. It has
Android 4.1, jellybean, installed and, as I mentioned before, was cheap
(less than £90 - after I had ordered it I found another site where it was
less than £60).
I am quite prepared for it to be a struggle to start with - I just don't
want it to be impossible.
My next challenge is to work out how to use the keyboard. I haven't been
able to find instructions on google.com/accessibility. Any suggestions of
sites or other resources which might help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert,
It's hard to know since you don't tell us which phone you have, except the
make, and which version of Android you are on.
But granularity works fine for me here, I think you have to get the up/down
just so. It's less forgiving than an iPhone for example, but it does work.

Hi all,
I have just had my cheap Huawei phone delivered. I had to get the children
to install talk-back.
I was able to launch the tutorials and follow the instructions with
difficulty. I assume different phones will have different screen sensitivity
meaning my cheap phone will be more difficult to use than a more espensive
one.
The one thing I completely failed in was reading text in an edit box using
the letter-by-letter granularity during the 4th tutorial. The phone just
made a clicking noise when I tried swiping down with one finger as
instructed.
Is the management of gestures a normal difficulty for beginners on Android ?

Hi Ian,
I would disagree with this as from Christmas.
The Android version allows you accessibly to buy books from within the app.
Apple on the other hand, you have to come out, go into Safari and do your
thing.
There are also other things that are better in Android, but I won't go into
them here, unless others are interested, but suffice to say, the Android app
is really rather good now.

Jim, you need to specify which device you're loading a book on to. Is it a
Kindle keyboard, or is it the Kindle app for iPhone or android? Or it could
be the latest Kindle fire. The answer to your question will be dependant on
this info. But in general books for the Kindle are available for purchase
from the Kindle store via amazon. other texts from other sources can be
either copied from a computer to a Kindle hardware device or accessed via
the Kindle app if they're emailed to the Apple or android device. My
understanding is that Apple remains the best option for accessibility.
