I am with George on this one, the only thing I would add is that 3GB is
certainly enough at the moment and probably for a while to come. Even 2GB
would still be pretty generous as far as RAM goes. We are not at that stage
where mainstream/office type applications really gobble up that much RAM to get
to 2GB. The problem is for anyone using 1GB, VISTA just to start cooking at
all will probably take 750MB with other essentials running. Once you go to 2GB
that extra 1GB is really for all your applications which is pretty good and you
probably won't top out over 2GB very easily.

Regards.

Hi Adrien,

There is a learning curve with Vista, but it won't usually
give you the screaming ab-dabs. If nothing else, you can at
least change to the Classic Start menu.

Office 2007 is the nasty one. For example in Word, while a
lot of keyboard shortcuts have been retained, the whole
structure has changed and things have been moved all over
the place.

George.

Hi George

It sounds like one of the equium range. Thanks for letting
me know.

Is vista easy to use and is there a tutorial on it?

Adrien

I was in a hurry, so didn't note the model number, but I had
a brief glimpse of a Toshiba in PC World, Northampton at the
weekend, where the keyboard included a number pad. As I
recall price was around £500 - £600.

George.

Hi Steve

No problem, I'll take a look at that site, obviously I have
to shop around. I have only used toshiba laptops, most of
them start at 2 gb ram which is pretty good. I don't know
the other makes, toshiba prices are reasonable too.

Hi Adrien,

I can't answer your Toshiba questions, I never buy them, I
don't like them.
They have non-standard drivers. That's just my opinion.

A good source for laptop stuff though is
http://www.laptopshop.co.uk.

All the best

Steve

Hi

I know there have been a whole load of messages recently
about laptops and I'm sorry to ask you guys to go over it
again but my questions are more specific.

I am interested in the toshiba equium 210, does any body use
this laptop? What is it like?
I am also seriously looking at the toshiba satellite 300d,
this has 2 gb ram and if I order it I will upgrade to 3 gb
of ram, is 2 gb sufficient to run vista and hal and all my
other programs? Would I be better with the 3 gb?

Lastly, being in France, not many companies over here will
supply me with a laptop with english keyboard or windows.
Therefore I have to purchase from the UK. I know of
play.com, laptops direct and pcworld, would you guys be able
to recommend some other companies to me please.

Regards

Adrien
