Hi Chris & All,

I'm finding this thread ver interesting having just bought an Acer laptop
wit Vista home premium which I have to say in hindsight I think was an idea.

Anyway my questions if I were to get a downgrade to XP how much issue would
it cause doing an install in losing the Acer stuff that's on my laptop?
Also having just loaded my last install of Office 2003 would I be able to
uninstall Office to allow me to install it again or would I have to get a
brand new copy?

Your comments gratefully appreciated,

Cheers,

Phil

I very much doubt it. Some companies, like Dell and Acer, are offering XP as
downgradable disks however, but I doubt you can buy machines with XP
preinstalled now.

Hi Steve,

I can sort of agree, but the Screen Reader hasn't been in
development for
all that long, and I would think better things are to come
in the next
version of the Mac Operating System. Also, the Mac is very
stable, not
something we can say about Windows!

I stil use XP Pro on my Windows Box, and I am happy enough
with it.

All the best

I agree about Vista, it isn't my idea of a good operating
system.
That's why I purchased a Mac! <Smile>.

Hi George,

If you change to the classic start menu though, you lose
one of the
few lovely advantages of Vista. You can go to the run
menu, and just
type anything and it will find the nearest program. So
you could
type "word" and you will be right on Word. If you change
that to
classic, you lose it. One of the few things I like about
Vista.
Other than that, I think Vista is Microsoft's idea of a
practical
joke.

All the best

Steve

Hi Adrien,

There is a learning curve with Vista, but it won't
usually
give you the screaming ab-dabs. If nothing else, you can
at
least change to the Classic Start menu.

Office 2007 is the nasty one. For example in Word, while
a
lot of keyboard shortcuts have been retained, the whole
structure has changed and things have been moved all over
the place.

George.

It sounds like one of the equium range. Thanks for
letting
me know.

Is vista easy to use and is there a tutorial on it?

I was in a hurry, so didn't note the model number, but I
had
a brief glimpse of a Toshiba in PC World, Northampton at
the
weekend, where the keyboard included a number pad. As I
recall price was around £500 - £600.

Hi Steve

No problem, I'll take a look at that site, obviously I
have
to shop around. I have only used toshiba laptops, most of
them start at 2 gb ram which is pretty good. I don't know
the other makes, toshiba prices are reasonable too.

Hi Adrien,

I can't answer your Toshiba questions, I never buy them,
I
don't like them.
They have non-standard drivers. That's just my opinion.

A good source for laptop stuff though is

Hi

I know there have been a whole load of messages recently
about laptops and I'm sorry to ask you guys to go over it
again but my questions are more specific.

I am interested in the toshiba equium 210, does any body
use
this laptop? What is it like?
I am also seriously looking at the toshiba satellite
300d,
this has 2 gb ram and if I order it I will upgrade to 3
gb
of ram, is 2 gb sufficient to run vista and hal and all
my
other programs? Would I be better with the 3 gb?

Lastly, being in France, not many companies over here
will
supply me with a laptop with english keyboard or windows.
Therefore I have to purchase from the UK. I know of
play.com, laptops direct and pcworld, would you guys be
able
to recommend some other companies to me please.

Regards

Adrien
