Thanks George.  The search certainly comes up with plenty of results, and some 
seem very 
relevant to my own problem.   I will study them more carefully tomorrow- 
hopefully in addition 
to reports of similar behaviour there might be a suggested fix! 

I had thought about SP1, but unfortunately, for reasons I will not go into 
here, I am one of the 
few remaining people on the planet still using dial up!  Need I say more?
