How do I know whether I have the latest software update? Is this done via the computer?

The voices used are Nuance Tom and Samantha - both are US adult voices. 3. The keyboard on the Kindle Keyboard contains all the letters in a qwerty layout, with some additional kindle-specific keys. The Kindle-specific keys are used for navigation, the letters for typing in search terms or book titles when you're in the Kindle store. 4. There are two voices in the Kindle Keyboard; VoiceGuide for the menus and an unnamed TTS for book content. The latter has to be turned on each time you open a book, and you can do it with a keystroke - Shift + Sym. UP until recently, VoiceGuide required you to go through a sequence of menus, which is of course difficult to do if you need the voice! The latest software update includes a keystroke for it - Shift + Space. I'd say that the capabilities needed for research - searching, annotating, quoting - are very poor on the Kindle, and that it's really only good for narrative reading. But a few more questions, at least for now? (smile). 1. If you use your PC to download books, presumably you connect your device to the computer to do so? Does this mean that there is some software you need for the PC to recognise Kindle in order to do that? 2. What voice does it use? Please don't say it's Daniel? (grin). 3. When people talk about a keyboard, do you mean a keypad on the device that you use for navigation purposes? 4. How easy is it to get the thing talking to start with? Someone on another list kindly gave me some info, but I've inadvertently deleted it while doing some PC housework. Many thanks. Feel free to write to me off list to avoid clutter if this thread is no longer of any interest to others.
