And they would never do lifetime of user on an app store. So that is out.
Remember, they also have to comply with Apple's App Store terms as well.

That refund of wayfinder was due to a violation of the terms and conditions
of licence acceptance under which the licence was applicable for lifetime of
user not of product. Vodaphone did not look at that when they closed
wayfinder down. If the ula of knfb reader says it is a licence for lifetime
of user, not lifetime of product, then there could be a case for getting
money back, as unless you are dead you still have a claim.

I do have a point regarding Tap Tap See. They have a 20 picture trial before
you are required to do an in-app purchase. So maybe KNFB Reader could
provide 20 scans at no charge before requiring an in-app purchase.
