Browsing through the blindcooltech page I came across a recent contribution
from Angie Matney on the soon to be released NFB-Kertzviele portable reader.
Its worth a listen.

Considering its early days yet, the thing seems to do quite well. They have
tried to incorporate help in aligning the text to be scanned for totally
blind users, and there's a pre-viewing facility for those who can see a
little. All that helps, as well as the in-built intelligence of the user,
as Angie demonstrates. I think though that if you are going to read things
out of the freezer, you might wipe away any ice and moisture to give the
reader a better chance.

Here's the brief blurb on the blindcooltech site.

KNFB Reader
5/20/2006 Angie Matney
demonstrates this portible scanning system that lets you read a variety of
material
with a device you can carry with you at all times. Based on a digital
camera and
a PDA, the Kurzweil/National Federation of the Blind Reader employs optical
character
recognition and intelligence to "straighten" images that may be flawed by,
for example,
the curve in the open pages of a book. 18.7 MB
