Hi Carol Firstly, as regards the iPod Touch versus the iPhone, you need to decidewhether you want the phone portion, and whether you could manage texting ina different way on a touch screen. I decided that as I have invested somuch in good handsets and Talks upgrades, going down the iPhone route wasn't for me. Also, I don't want an expensive contract. I'm on an O2 Simplicity now for £15 per month. This gives me 600 minutes, unlimited text messages, and free O2 to O2 calls. It's a Sim only contract for 12 months, and I likeit. I think you would just need to check if you go for an iPhone whattariff your network would offer in terms of Internet download as it would beeasy to stream happily for hours and then have a nasty bill at the end of it?I'm actually wondering whether I could use Joikuspot on my Nokia handset ifI'm out and want to have a quick browse on my iPod Touch. I can't imagine why this wouldn't work for all the times I would be doing it, but may give it a go some day. Regarding your Bose speaker system, I've got the Bose Companion speakersystem on one of my laptops. But I can plug it into the iPod Touch and it's very good which is what I'm currently doing while listening to Tune In Radioand Five Live Sports Extra's coverage of the tennis. Incidentally, one further app I downloaded from that terribly addictivestore yesterday, again for 59p, was called Quick News UK. It gives you some websites like the BBC, Google News, Yahoo News, and some of the more popularnewspapers like the Telegraph, Guardian, Times, Sun, Mirror and Reuters is there too. If you go into any of these, you can go through the links ofnews or sports categories, for example, that you want to read. It cuts outa lot of the advertising from what I've seen, and is tailored for the iPod/iPhone/iPad families. Again, this is perfectly accessible with VoiceOver. Obviously, you would need to go online and therefore have your hotspots available outwith your broadband connection to get the latest, but it's brill. One other tiny thing to mention is that the British Birds app I purchased acouple of days ago had a free update where more birds and info had beenadded. If you get an update to one of your apps, it tells you, and you justput in your details and let it update for you. Hope the temptation of all this is of help Carol! (big smile). Just can't quite decide whether to go forphone or the Ipod Touch. Strangely enough, we are also looking at Bose systems right now and I'm thinking of Bose speakers for my computer system which is away from the main stereo.Anyway, I now fully understand the difference between these two so shall be looking, though am disappointed as we don't have an Apple store very near atall. -- Carol P ---- Original Message ---- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairnsplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2011 8:31 AM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Four apps for iPod Touch/iPhone to recommendHi Carol With the iPod Touch, as long as you put your broadband security key in, you will be able to treat it like a PC online, where you can download material and browse the Internet. What you can't obviously do is make calls etc, because the phone part is not included. But, as I've said several times, the phone isn't the bit I want as I am happy with the handsets and Talks I use. I just love the iPod Touch for the applications it can work with. At the moment, for example, I have put my device through a set of Bose speakers, and am listening to Five Live Sports Extra so I can hear the tennis. Quality is very good and no drop-out or stuttering. I hadn't thought about it going online, though I should, knowing that Apples stuff works with ITunes, and I certainly hadn't thought about it being able to run these other apps. Very interesting, for sure! So, does anyone know if all apps work across the board on their equipment? Just interested in how things work. ... -- Carol P ---- Original Message ---- From: "Jackie Cairns" <jackie.cairnsplace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2011 10:21 AM Subject: [access-uk] Four apps for iPod Touch/iPhone to recommendMy Apple keyboard arrived yesterday, and pairing it with my iPod Touch was extremely straightforward. So I decided to visit the App Store and, for 59p each, I bought four applications that work with VoiceOver. They are the World Fact Book 2011, a dictionary and thesaurus, Tune In Radio and, probably my favourite, Birds of Britain. The latter is an amazing little program if you love bird sound and details. Not only can you play the song, but you can listen to VoiceOver provide a description of their size, colour, family, time of year etc. There is also a favourites button to use where you can add a library of your favourite birds to it. Tune In Radio is great. Similarly, there is a bookmark facility where you can make a list of the stations you wish to add. Because I love tennis, and the Australian Open is on at the moment, I have great difficulty getting it on DAB as we have such a diabolical signal in these parts. So when I tuned in using the Sonata at 8.00 this morning, a message said that restricted rights prevented coverage. I find this often happens at weekends when football matches are in progress too. So I tuned my iPod to Sports Extra and, low and behold, got the tennis on live. All the above apps work with VoiceOver. I don't use my keyboard for everything, mainly when I get into tricky areas that need a bit of typing. Mostly, I use my fingers and have got used to doing so now. Just thought I'd pass on the info.
