Alfred,
If you have a Java item in your control panel, then you have the Java run-time engine installed.
If you then get silence when you select Java from the control panel, that's because the Java control program which is launched is itself written in Java, and unless you have the JAB installed, it won't be accessible.

I am currently doing an on-line course and use Supernova but unfortunately it does not work with Java. Java program is used to access the on-line tutorial at the Open University. Does Jaws work kwith Java?
