I haven't used Real Speak.

Is it CPU intensive?

I've a core 2 duo here that I can use Neo Speech with Window Eyes without a
system hit but older machines would suffer badly in terms of performance.

Hi.

I would certainly agree that too much of what HJ are doing is bug fixes and
not enough is new features but as far as Vista goes I understood that FS
were going to release a free update to JAWS version 8.

As far as real speak is concerned, I am myself quite happy with Eloquence
but I have been using speech synthesisers for some time.

for those that have not, my own evidence suggests that they find the real
speak synths much easier to understand.

If i'm reading a long text, give me Braille any time but that's my personal
preference and fortunately I have the sense of touch required to read
Braille and I have been able to access Braille classes at school.

regards

Graham

Hi,

I now have the RTM DVD of Vista though won't be trying it. The point I =
was trying to make was that this 8.0 came only a few days after the =
hotfix for 7.10, we were quite happy with this hotfix for IE, and FS =
could have spent longer testing the v8 version, possibly getting a =
version that has Vista compatability out end of Jan/middle of Feb =
sometime.

As Barry says the new features in it aren't really worth bothering with, =
there is in the new features list some Jaws keystrokes for moving round =
tabs in IE7, the thing is that those are Windows commands and I can do =
this fine now in version 7.10!

Andrew.

Vista will be out January 30.

The Gold Disc was released on November 8, and the MSDN guys and =
Corporate=20
customers will have it if not now then by the end of this month.

The main reason January 30 is set for consumers is because of driver=20
compatibilitys with current hardware. To give the hardware vendors a =
window=20
to update their drivers.

My reason for calling it a disaster is that it's not moving forward. =
It's=20
not adding any real, everyday functionality, I didnt' see anything about =

Office 2007, SAPI Alia's?

coem on. Able to switch the voice ont he fly when reading text?

That's not screen and application access, that's just a bit of fancy =
reading=20
scripting.

I to was once int he comfort zone of Jaws and occasionally go back. =
Old=20
habits die hard.

Fs haven't committed to making this upgrade vista-compatible, but then =
at
the moment we don't know when vista will be released yet, so that seems
reasonable enough to me. I wonder what level of access to Vista WE =
users
will get for what they have already paid? JAWS has done a great job for =
me
for the last nine years, I agree that WE is catching up, and is probably
ahead in terms of its user interface being far simpler etc, but I see no
reason for calling the latest version of JAWS a "disaster".

ali, what specific problems are you having with JAWS 8?

James
