Richard and all,

I don't know what triggers this rather unpredictable behaviour with JAWS 
either.  The only thing I'd say is that I'm not sure that I've ever used a 
laptop where JAWS has been perfect!  <Smile>

I guess I've just learned to live with it, though would rather not of 
course.
