Hello Ray Jaws does have a mute command but it takes more than one key press to turn it on, you turn it on thus: 1 Press insert+V and then latter M until you get to mute. 2 Tap spacebar to turn it on and then press enter. Jaws now remains silent until you press insert+V again where it will come straight back. Note that this method does nothing to the soundcard. I have never understood the mechanism by which Jaws users manage to get the soundcard muted but it does happen. I don't think this is Jaws problem/bug but so far unreproducable sequence of events that lead to the soundcard being muted. You can usually tell this is the problem because you will not hear the start up toen that Windows on most setups normally plays. If you get no tone and no speech, it's very likely to be the soundcard mute rather than Jaws not loading. If muting of the soundcard is becoming a common issue then you might want to try a peice of software on thw www.jfwlite.com website called Quick Mix, which allows you to restore at startup a pre-set group of settings for the soundcard, this means whatever you do to it in one sessio can be undone and set back by restrarting the PC, that way the problem should never occur again. Hope this is useful. Regards. A friend I've helped before who does have JAWS finds he has yet again lost speech output. Its weird that this keeps happening. JAWS is configured to load at start-up and I prsume it is loading, but he's hearing nothing. Somehow I think one of the mute settings in the audio mixer keeps getting put to the on status. So, just two questions: does JAWS have a mute command, and if so, what is it? Second, is there a hot key to load JAWS when its not running? I am really puzzled as to why this keeps happening and wonder if there is a keystroke he is inadvertantly pressing that is causing this to happen. Either that or some mischievous software fairy is doing something on the sly.
