Would love to know the answer for this one too. On my XP computer and Jaws 11
I've the same issue. Wander if the colour choice of highlighted messages in the
read page in Options has anything to do with this problem. What is quite
baffling is that some people appear to not have this issue with their systems.

using JAWS 11 and windows 7 and windows live mail, I there a way of getting
JAWS to announce whether an email is unread or not, and how many emails
there are in a partcular folder as in outlook express.
