In Word 2010, Alt + F; then T for Options. Cursor down to "Advanced" and tab across to the details. At the bottom there is a General section and the first item is what you want. In 2003, you go to Tools, Options, and choose the General tab where a box can be ticked or unticked providing feedback with sound. I have 2010 on my laptop, so will check it out for you if nobody else has any suggestions. I do know what you mean, I am used to the ping at the top and bottom of a document as well. I should point out, I have been using JAWS for about 3 and a half years now. My issue is with JAWS and MS Word 2010. When I get to the end of a document and press the down arrow, there is no longer a sound produced to indicate it is in fact the end of the document. I previously ran MS Word 2010 under Windows 7, and the sound indicating the end of the document was always produced. Any help or advice you can give me is very much appreciated.
