Hi John,

I think that keyboard shortcuts for adjusting volume tend to vary from computer
to computer, though yours may well have some.

Are you running a laptop? I know that some, HP in particular, have a row of
touch sensors above the function keys that are used for adjusting/muting volume
and various other features, which I occasionally used to knock when I owned one.

Your best bet might be to Google for information about your particular system
to see if you can find out what the keyboard shortcuts are.

Window-Eyes automatically unmutes/adjusts volume when loaded, but I don’t think
either JAWS or NVDA do. You could always put a demo of Window-Eyes (or the
free version if you’re running Office 2010 or higher on your system) and load
it whenever this happens. Alternatively, you could look to put a shortcut on
your desktop to load the volume control and assign a hotkey to it. Obviously
you’d need to make any changes without speech initially, but it’s not a
complicated dialogue so you may be able/willing to remember the keystrokes.

Cheers,

Ed
