Hi Carol.

No, if you use the home key to activate Siri, you can use any one of its functions so you could be in one email message and reply to another, you could be in a completely different application for that matter. On the other hand, if in an edit field and you use the dictate button, what you say will then be placed in that edit field. Give it a shot, let me know how you get on and we'll take it from there.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Do you mean that you have to be in mail, somewhere in one of the messages
from John Smith in order to say "Reply to John Smith"?

Hi Carol.

OK, a couple of things to note. Firstly, the email
addresses of the contacts you want to email *must* be
stored on your IPhone. If you're using a service like
Google mail, Hotmail or other such email provider which
stores contacts on a server to which the IPhone is
associated, you'll see those contacts but Siri wont. Secondly, when sending an email to a contact, you can
either reply to the message in the normal way, that is to
say hit the reply button while reading the email, or hold
down the home button, say "email to john smith" with your
message for example. Siri will recite the message back
to you and if all is correct, you can instruct Siri to
send the message by saying "send message" or similar.
I hope this provides a little more incite for you.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Although there are some problems with dictation, I think
most of mine come from getting Siri to know which email
to reply to, and sometimes whether to send a message or
email.
All clarification gratefully received with some examples
if you can.

Hi Carol.

There really is no secret to using Siri above what has
been said already. When in a text field, use the dictate
button on the keyboard to dictate text, speak clearly and
try to speak in a complete sentence if at all possible.
If you want punctuation in your text, you'll need to say
things like full stop, question mark, comma, exclamation
mark etc. as Siri doesn't have a detailed profile of your
voice like Dragon on the PC would create.
All the best, Ibrahim.

I've had quite a few failures too and have often resorted
to keyboard myself so, please, Ibrahim, tell us a few
secrets of words/expressions Siri definitely understands
here in the UK and, while you're at it, do you find the
"Dictate" button more successful, as I do, in that Siri
then seems to know where I'm going.
I thought he was supposed to learn our style, etc., and I
hoped he'd learn some of the words he gets wrong, but I'm
not convinced on that right now. Again, I've had some
success with queries and of course setting reminders
etc., but dictation isn't going as well as I'd hoped.
