Thanks to Colin from Ray also. I have'nt had time to mull over the figures Colin has given us as yet. I should like to make one thing clear: Dealers (have) to have a margin; manufacturers and designers too. These are not charities, they are businesses. There prime insentive is profit; without that there would be no product, and nothing to argue about. Some may also have a mission more or less to be ethical and to provide a service, and this is where the debate should be centred. I find it very hard to see why software should carry a much more generous margin in the UK than, seemingly, elsewhere, especially when you consider this could be downloaded by many now direct from the vendor. With harwarehardware and the specially written software, often living in flash memory or whatever, the situation is different as I see it. Here again though some suppliers seem to want to make a generous margin both on selling and on servicing. One example. A friend sent a Braillelite back to have the battery replaced. The bill? £120.00. That does not strike me as either justifiable or fair. Turning to the Braillenote PK, there was a review/interview with Jonathan Mozan on Main Menu recently, so maybe that would reveal the exact nature of the PK's OS and other issues. Again! Nice one, Colin. I commend you for being so honest and forthright. I will have to read through these figures again to digest them properly but it seems that New Vision are working at a very reasonable margin. It would be nice if all access companies worked to a similar margin but, being the cynic I am, I doubt it. Hi Barry As a rule of thumb a typical manufacturer will put 100% mark-up on the cost of producing that product to give the RRP. In effect doubling the cost of manufacture. This will cover overheads, research and development, sales and marketing and distribution to other countries. UK Distributors often try to work on 40% of the RRP. Sub-dealers work on 10 - 20% depending on the product sold. New Vision import Steller products into the UK and sell at 20%. We buy other parts and products from the far east assemble them in the UK and do our best to keep our margin as low as possible, hopefully making technology affordable to all. No doubt I will get into lots of trouble for saying the above. I can imagine it is more than their job is worth. Then again, if it is a reasonable profit margin then, surely that would be a positive endorsement of the company. > Barry H > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Wally.Harding@xxxxxxxxxxx > To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Sent: Wednesday, July 28, 2004 8:16 AM > Subject: [access-uk] Re: In Touch: Why do we pay so much?
