First Direct never charge for money transfers by telebanking and,
incidentally, their number is also 40.

I don't know about other banks, but Nationwide if you use their online current account system on the web you can avoid charges transferring money to other bank accounts. Obviusly you need the other party's bank details.

It seems like this is one of these things which costs a small fortune. One I saw was around £150 + VAT.

However, I did find a free trial at:-

You might find more yourself at Google.

Possible?

Maybe a bit OT, so replies off-list welcomed via the email

link below if necessary.

Just transfered some cash to another account. My own bank

said they wanted £20.00 to do it,No Way! but advised me
to
go across the road to HSBC where the payee's account, it
turns out, was held.

The paying in slip indicated that '40' designates HSBC in
the
banking system. Anyone know if other banks can readily be

identified by the first two numbers of the sort code in
this
fashion? CAn be useful to know if you are in easy reach
of
all major banks like I am.
