First Direct never charge for money transfers by telebanking and, 
incidentally, their number is also 40.

I don't know about other banks, but Nationwide if you use their online
current account system on the web you can avoid charges transferring money
to other bank accounts.  Obviusly you need the other party's bank details.

It seems like this is one of these things which costs a
small fortune.  One I saw was around £150 + VAT.
