Maybe a bit OT, so replies off-list welcomed via the email link below if necessary. Just transfered some cash to another account. My own bank said they wanted £20.00 to do it,No Way! but advised me to go across the road to HSBC where the payee's account, it turns out, was held. The paying in slip indicated that '40' designates HSBC in the banking system. Anyone know if other banks can readily be identified by the first two numbers of the sort code in this fashion? CAn be useful to know if you are in easy reach of all major banks like I am.
