I have had similar problems recently.

I don't know what happened, but I rebooted the phone, and Alex came back.  I
was in Tweetings and it suddenly stopped working with no fingers anywhere
near a speech mute! But it is a gesture I can never remember for some
reason.

Thanks all, hopefully Alex is happy again now.

I just can't remember how to unmute speech as my phone just seems to
have stopped speaking.  I can hear all the sounds, but VoiceOver won't
talk, yet it is turned on, and the volume is up.

Help!!
