I think it's a visual thing Carol, to make the workbook less cluttered from a 
visual standpoint. What I do when I see merged cells is to unmerge them. This 
enables me to read the data cell by cell.

Well, sorry Chris, no it doesn't.  I mean, I understand that's the case but 
why do you want to do it?  What does it achieve?
