"Yes" to your first question and "you can't" to your second. There may
be ways around this limitation of iTunes, but I don't know them!

Thanks for this Steve. So if I use my laptop to send files to my iPad I
will 
lose everything that is on my iPad at present? I usually use my desktop
to 
send files to my iPad... And if this is the case, then how can one send 
files to an Apple product while away from home?

Sorry for hammering this point but I don't want to try and end up with
an 
iPad with no music, books nor applications on!
