Hi Eleanor.

I cant comment on the way that you claim you've been treated, perhaps there was a reason for you being turned down and that would be dependant on your particular circumstances. What I can say though is that is absolutely rubbish for them to claim that you can only get support if you're housebound. I'm certainly not housebound and can lead as independent a life as my next door neighbor can, but there are certain things I cant do on my own which is the thrust of any argument you have to make.

I was turned down, I did not have that much savings, they said following the assessment that I would have to pay in full for any help I required, interesting you come up with a figure of 23, my borough told me at first that I would not be turned down unless I had 2 houses and savings of 30 thousand. I am so tired I even had such a battle to get the assessnent and they had made their minds up from the 1st phone call when the duty social worker said so rudely that being blind was no qualifying factor for additional payments I would have to demonstrate that I waas unable to do anything for myself and that I was housebound and many blind people lead independent lives. It took so many letters of complaint before I got the assessment and then when I did it was a total waste of time. They sent me a print letter turning me down and when I asked for the letter in an e-mail as an attachment they sent it but when I went to open the word attachnent it asked me for a password. I did not have a password so wrote back using the e-mail reply. No need to tell you I did not have a reply. Actually when the person who was coming out to do the financial assessment, I had to cancel that appointment so sent an e-mail to cancel and followed up with aphone call of cancellation, the person was not told I had cancelled. She came out and I was not in. She phoned me and told me that if a situation like this occurs then I am automatically turned down. I then had nore arguements and the proof of my e-mail of cancellation and phone call. In the assessment for example looking at my outgoings when I said that I had phone rental and mobile phone contract she said that they were only allowed to allow one pound and fifty pence a week for land-line and nothing for mobile phone.

Hi Eleanor.

You can only be turned down if you have savings of over £23000 or more,
other than that they should give you an assessment as it is your legal right
to be assessed.

Well I was turned down for this direct payment so that is that!  They
turned me down on my first phone call and when I insisted on the
assessment etc, I was still turned down!

it took me over a year to get my first payment!  Then I had to fight for
the next year after only half a year! lol Now I'm so glad I did as my DBC

If your in the UK, you apply to social services for direct payments,
this
will give you money to pay a Personal Assistant, of your own choice, who
will help you with day-to-day tasks like, shopping, hobbies just about
anything, mine helps me with my hobby which is crafting so I need help
sorting colours, also with my greenhouse planting and other tasks I wish
to
do which I need help for.  SDS is Self Directed Support and in applying
for
this you must ask for an amount to help fund expensive equipment which
you
can not otherwise afford, I have just been fortunate enough to obtain a
DBC,
DeafBlind Communicator, for which I was given a one-off payment. I have
it
fully covered for six years and was given a full days training to ensure
I
am able to use the equipment.  You can't ask for Normal things like,
washing
machine, cooker, sofa etc but if you can justify why you need Jaws as
apposed to an available free screenreader I'm sure this will be
acceptable.
From what I can understand the goverment will allow a budget of so many
hours per week and if you don't need all that time then you can request
the
funding to be used on specialist equipment.

I had to be pretty insistant and know all my rights, but got there in
the
end.

Apply for SDS and ask for help with specialist equipment. This is the
