To add to this, I'd strongly urge anyone going down the SDS route to get an advocate to support them through the process. They should know the current legal framework and as important they should have contacts within the local authority which should make things easier. Interesting how things work in parallel, we've been talking about this on the Vigen-access list recently.

The RNIB have a comprehensive fact sheet about this. You can download a Word version or read the html version at: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:OZhQplcj7pgJ:www.rnib.o rg.uk/livingwithsightloss/Documents/Self-directed_support_factsheet.doc+%22s elf+directed+support%22+blind+partially+sighted&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk Cheers Barry -----Original Message-----From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf OfJanet Tuggey Sent: 22 October 2010 7:41 AM To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: Help with the cost of Access Technology Hi Christine, not sure about the group allowing attachments, but I'dcertainly be interested in having them, as I'm sure my social worker and thepeople who are supposed to be representing me don't really have a clue. A person with adual impairment has a few more rights but non the less, you are still entitled to direct payments...This is quite new and even social servicesthemselves aren't very clear on our rights, so you just have to search them on the net, read and learn all about what your entitled to and fight, it is actually illegal for social services not to allow you access. I'm no use at searching or I'd post a link, I have attachments I can post but not sure ifthe group allow attachments. Still miracles couldoccur.Janet & Wheat, the silly Shepherd cross -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Christine Weetman Sent: 21 October 2010 17:56 To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Re: Help with the cost of Access Technology If your in the UK, you apply to social services for direct payments, this will give you money to pay a Personal Assistant, of your own choice, who will help you with day-to-day tasks like, shopping, hobbies just about anything, mine helps me with my hobby which is crafting so I need help sorting colours, also with my greenhouse planting and other tasks I wish to do which I need help for. SDS is Self Directed Support and in applying for this you must ask for an amount to help fund expensive equipment which you can not otherwise afford, I have just been fortunate enough to obtain a DBC, DeafBlind Communicator, for which I was given a one-off payment. I have it fully covered for six years and was given a full days training to ensure I am able to use the equipment. You can't ask for Normal things like, washing machine, cooker, sofa etc but if you can justify why you need Jaws as apposed to an available free screenreader I'm sure this will be acceptable. From what I can understand the goverment will allow a budget of so many hours per week and if you don't need all that time then you can request the funding to be used on specialist equipment. I had to be pretty insistant and know all my rights, but got there in the end. Sorry for the long email. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
