Chris, as I said, well done then. I would need telling by a sighted person more than a couple of times before I got it down to a fine art. I would probably have to write down every single stroke. It's something Ian would love to do by himself, but it's getting someone with the patience to sit and go over it until he felt comfortable enough to try it out.

That's why I say it isn't achievable if you don't have initial sighted help, unless you can use software to do it all for you. That's what I'm getting at.

Jackie

Hi all, thought I'd comment on my experiences installing Windows. It first began when I had to buy a copy of Windows ME for my first desktop PC, which did have a recovery disk, but I had to replace the motherboard and, to cut a long story short, I found out the hard way and bought Windows ME. The first time I installed Windows ME I got someone to tell me what happens if I tab, etc. From then on I just practiced each time I needed to and eventually I was able to install it with no fuss. The same was true for Windows XP for my second desktop. So it's just a case of getting someone to watch you first, for example helping you either remember or write down the product key, then persist from there. However, I hear that for those who wish to install Vista a product key is not required to install, but to activate, so in theory one could install Vista with fewer keys and run it in "trial mode" until they can get help writing down the product key. Hope this helps.

Clearly it does sound as if some blind people can do an installation of an operating system without sighted help; given that there is no JFW assistance for this, then it must be a question of deliberate steps; isn't that something we all could learn if somebody detailed them for us? What actual expertise is required to reinstall that can be done without speech, and how is it possible to know what to do and when if there is no speech? -

Andy

| Hi Steve
|
| Oh yeah the old mute has cropped up once or twice.
|
| What I would say Steve is that you are extremely competent at doing updates
| etc, and that's commendable. But not everyone has the knowledge nor
| confidence,. I wouldn't, for example, restore my hard drive without my son | being present to at least get us to the point where we can install JAWS.
| I'm not saying it can't be done without sight, I'm just saying that the
| degree of experience and confidence in this scenario matters a lot, and
| differs greatly among users.
