The 4th generation is the one to go for if the family member in question has a
4K tv. Note you will also need to buy a HDMI cable for the Apple TV as it
doesn't come with one as standard and this will need to be 4K compatible. If
your friend is just using a standard HD telly then you could go for the 3rd
generation which is of course a deal cheaper. As for the apps, Now TV is most
certainly available on Apple TV, however not sure about DPlay, perhaps you
could look at their website to see if Apple TV is listed as a supported
streaming device?

I am considering purchasing an apple TV 4th generation streaming device for a
family member. However, I would like to make sure that certain apps are
available to download. Could someone please confirm if the DPlay app and now TV
apps are available? If you type the names of the apps as they are written, I am
hoping they will be available for installation. I would also be interested in
any opinions on whether it's worth going for a 4th generation or 3rd generation
