Alt N is the key combination to access the toolbar in IE to allow a download or
a popup. So that keystroke might be what you're looking for to open that PDF
document.

  Hello Mark,

Although I've not used HSBC, all the ones I've used have an option
view the statement on-screen rather than PDF.

However, if that's not possible, a workaround for the solution may be
  to shift-click the link.

If that doesn't work, they have a helpdesk phone number:

"For advice on how to use our Internet Banking service or specific
transaction enquiries please telephone our Helpdesk on 0845 600 2290
  (overseas +44 1226 261226). Lines are open from 8am to 10pm every
  day."

Actually, I'd call the "from overseas" number 01226 261226 as you
avoid 0845 charges and usually get through quicker :)
