I have never heard of any totally blind person I know ever being consulted
about any of the changes which are made by our most powerful blindness
organizations.

Subject: [access-uk] HSBC and RNIB! braille statements
My sister has just spoken to Neil Shadbolt at HSBC.
he explained that they have previously consulted with RNIB and found
that many visually impaired customers had problems with braille
statements
not fitting through letter boxes and then the statements being left
elsewhere. They also found that the majority of visually impaired
people
found braille on both sides of a paper better than on just one side.
It was found to be more accessible to them. He said that they have to
go
with what the majority find more accessible and not what the
individual
preference may be. He said that if it was found that many visually
impaired people contacted the bank and asked for the statement to be
on
one side of a paper only then they would look at changing to that. He
said they won't change the brailling to suit just one person's
preference.
It has to be what the majority find is more accessible.
Well RNIB was aware the majority didn't want the
talking news papers to change!
I don't believe the majority of Braille users actually said they
find Braille on both sides of paper better.
But to keep on topic I feel RNIB could be making it clear
to the bank, how easy it is to offer a choice.
Choice is offered for grade 1 Braille.
So technically choice is possible.
As for the consultation, was anyone on this list
consulted?
Regards, Derek
