This morning I copied the tracks across to iTunes and it advised that it would
convert the files into another format, something like ACC, I didn't catch what
it said, but it did this and now the tracks are in my iTunes Library and
playing just fine.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Hi Alison,

As Iain said, apparently iTunes doesn’t play WMA file formats and you will have
to convert those files to MP3 or another compatible iTunes file formats. I
believe VLC Media Player should do it, but Have a look at these pages below for
how to convert using iTunes and other related info:

Yes, I have followed your instructions as far as I am able, but
having selected "play with iTunes" I don't seem to have anything to tab
forward to.
Does iTunes play WMA files?
What is strange is that this is a Paul McCartney 2 disk CD, one CD
being in
mp3 format and the other, the one I am having difficulty importing
into iTunes, is WMA.

Alison,

Right click one of the music tracks in question>expand Open with from
the dropdown menu (H)>click on Choose another app>highlight iTunes in
the popup
dialog>tab to the Always open this app to open. checkbox and check
it>finally, tab to the ok button and click it.

This works for changing the default application for most of the file
types, media or otherwise. If any of the above isn't clear, give us a shout.

Itunes is my default media player and yet, when downloading some
music recently, instead of going to iTunes, it is being played by
Groove - I think the tracks are mp4, so don't know if this makes a
difference.

Is there a way of getting them to be played by iTunes?
