Unfortunately, iTunes does not play WMA files. You will need to convert these
files to MP3 or M4A.

Yes, I have followed your instructions as far as I am able, but having
selected "play with iTunes" I don't seem to have anything to tab forward to.
Does iTunes play WMA files?
What is strange is that this is a Paul McCartney 2 disk CD, one CD being in
mp3 format and the other, the one I am having difficulty importing into
iTunes, is WMA.

Alison,

Right click one of the music tracks in question>expand Open with from the
dropdown menu (H)>click on Choose another app>highlight iTunes in the popup
dialog>tab to the Always open this app to open. checkbox and check
it>finally, tab to the ok button and click it.

This works for changing the default application for most of the file types,
media or otherwise. If any of the above isn't clear, give us a shout.

Itunes is my default media player and yet, when downloading some music

think the tracks are mp4, so don't know if this makes a difference.

Is there a way of getting them to be played by iTunes?
