Hi Derek.

The current version says it can do M4A files but I haven't used this myself. I might download the latest version though to try. Goldwave is shareware and you could probably use the batch conversion tool for years before you were asked to purchase. The cost, I think, was around £30 or £40 so it's a very good deal to buy anyway.

Here follows the download page link and a little text around file types now supported...

Process an unlimited number of files in many different formats. Use Batch Processing to process and convert your complete library of songs: match volume levels of different songs, boost the bass, trim leading and trailing silences, convert to MP3, and much more. Supports iTunes Plus, m4a, wav, wma, mp3, ogg, aiff, au, vox, FLAC, and even raw binary data. Entire folders and subfolders can be processed with just a few clicks and the entire hierarchy preserved.

Jim,

I do not have Kevin's post but here are the instructions saved as a file
from him, pasted in here.

The person in question was wanting to change volume over a few files, so
these ought also to serve your needs.

A way of using batch converter in GoldWave.

1. Alt+F to open the file menu.

2. Press letter B to open the batch converter dialogue.

3. Tab to the Add Files button and press enter.

4. You will now be able to browse to find the folder where your files
reside.

5. Use standard windows keystrokes to select the files you want to convert,
e.g. Control+A to select all in the folder, etc.

6. When all are selected from a given folder, tab to the open button and
press enter.

7. Now tab 3 times to the tabs selection where the first two choices are
Convert and Process.

8. Press right arrow to get to the Process tab

9. Tabbing once will take you into the list of effects you want to apply
which will probably be empty at the moment.

10. Tab again to the Add Effect button and press enter.

11. A tree view will now have opened up and tabbing once will take you to
it.

12. Press right arrow to open the tree view.

13. Press the letter C about 3 times until you hear change volume announced.

14. Now press right arrow to open the change volume options.

15. Arrow down until you hear the volume you want to use.

16. Now tab to the Add button and press enter.

17. If this is the only effect you want to apply, tab to the Close button
and press enter.

18. Now if you shift+tab back into the list of effects, you're chosen
options will be there.

19. Shift+tab again to get back to the list of tabs and press left arrow to
get back to the Convert tab.

20. Tab once and if you don't want to change the format of your files, make
sure the 'Convert to this format' checkbox is not checked.

21. Tab to the Begin button and press enter.

22. You will get a confirmation dialogue when conversion is complete which
you can read to check if all files were converted successfully.

This sounds long winded and it definitely was to write out! However, it's very intuitive once you've used it a few times and the options are saved in GoldWave for future conversions so if you always use the same effects, you
won't have to do most of the above, just add your files and begin the
conversion.

It's a very powerful tool for batch changes of many file formats and there's
loads of effects to choose from, not just volume changes.
