I have only had about half a dozen messages which were spam since I set up an
account with my isp in April.

Peter, what do you exactly mean by this? Gmail has a very good spam filter.
I've had very few e-mails that were legitimate that was spam, however it's easy
to report it as not spam and thus move it to your inbox. Is this what you're
looking for?
